I wonder about that too, Bret.
I’m sure there’s a historian somewhere who thinks s/he knows the origins of crowdsurfing, but I can only speculate:
Certainly punk / DIY provides conditions for crowd surfing that don’t exist to the same extent in other music cultures. I’m thinking of the lack of a strict separation between band and audience that makes attendees feel able to get on and jump off the stage, and (for some, and then only for the certain sub-genres) the relative unlistenability of the music which keeps scenes small and leads to certain expressions of group solidarity.
I’m sure some people have much more to say about this. I would love to know what others think.
Great photos so far, by the way. I’m addicted. Keep em coming!
