Smoking ban

This blog mainly focuses on DIY house shows (some of which allow smoking), but I make it out to bar shows often. Over the last couple years no issue has been as controversial as the smoking ban, and I finally read an article studying the affects.

While I’m somewhere between apathetic and slightly for the ban, it’s strange to visit a place like Indiana that still allows smoking indoors. Growing up with two parents who smoked (only in the basement or outside), it’s weird to think smoking will nearly be eliminated in my lifetime.

Not sure if I buy the results from this study, but if you’re a bar owner, employee or musician, what has been your experience regarding the ban?

Mainstream music I don’t care about

Waking up in bed it’s dark out so it must be late. Another Sunday ruined by Saturday.

Feeling the least worst, I’m caretaker. The floor is covered in her puke and boxes of Chinese takeout. Both seem like they occurred lifetimes ago.

Outside I hear explosions, not sure if they’re fireworks or gunshots at first, but I opt for the former because of their frequency. They’re coming from the same direction, towards the soccer stadium, and I can faintly make out “Kickstart my Heart.”

Love makes hangover that much more bearable.

Bonus: Click here for a John Petric review of Bob Dylan’s new album. I don’t always agree with what he has to say, but Petric is always entertaining and the only music journalist in town I look forward to reading.

Painkiller @ The Last House on the Left, 5.16.2009

Pardon the lack of posts recently. With it feeling like summer I’ve been busy with noncamera activities: mountain biking, accomulating traffic tickets, eating ice cream and gambling.

Despite the cops showing up a couple of times and the sounds of Slipknot traveling down the railroad tracks during their performance at Crew Stadium, another rager was had at The Last House. Heard one of the dudes from the touring band Sunshine SS say Columbus was their best show outside of their Boston, their hometown. If this house keeps this legacy going it will implode.

“If this set sucks this is going to be why.”

It didn’t. Sure, it was a little sloppy with people falling into the drum set and goof ups that were corrected so well they almost seemed planned, but this is what punk played in a basement with spraypainted walls should sould like.

I think musicians in this type of situtation tend to care too much what they sound like, but it works both ways when I only post my good photos. (These, BTW, are all I’m posting because I left my auto focus off for the first two bands, oops.)

One hint of professionalism during the night came from an unknown dreadlocked sound guy who made adjustments to the equipment for everyone’s set until he was told to knock it off. Does this mean in the future DIY bands will be forced to sell presale tickets so they can pay this guy’s salary?

Shithole Day Fest, 5.9.2009

Is a bender staying up well past dawn before stumbling down to Buckeye Donuts for breakfast two out of the last three nights? Not sure, but by trading Friday night and Saturday morning for Saturday afternoon I missed most of Shithole Day Fest, which, for better or worse, was like relocating Bourbon Street to a backyard.

In one hour I saw most of what I was hoping to see: an uninvited Painkiller set menos Ana (last two photos) and Nigger Lover (above). Puffy Aureoles allegedly cancelled.

It most be hard for a group to follow up a former project like Hugs & Kisses which consisted of unique theatrical, soulful productions that made them one of the most creative, and in turn, best groups in town

Excited to see what an interview said was a return to rock ‘n’ roll was crushingly disappointing as the group was stripped down to the bare basics - a trashcan and unamplified vocals mostly about pussy with lines like ”even bitches need pussy,” “riding your bike makes your pussy tight,” and ”I can eat a whole bowl of that pussy.”

Vulgarities and being provocative can produce one hell of an artistic expression, but there’s needs to be a purpose. Maybe that’s the point and everyone that doesn’t get it is dense. Still, there’s already too many hipster, irony-for-irony’s-sake-alone types, pretension at its worst.

I’ll be holding out on hope for a while because these guys just have too much potential. I can understand ditching Hugs & Kisses for something new, but whatever it is needs to be something unique instead of catering to your friends. That’s the most rebellious thing you can do.

Shithole Day Fest and Punk Porch show today

Posted in Columbus, DIY, punk with tags , on May 9, 2009 by blackcloudphoto

Thought I would remind everyone about two interesting shows today.

The first is Shithole Day Fest starting at 2 p.m. Judging by the number of bands this will last a long time if the cops don’t bust it up.  Fourteen bands including Nigger Lover, Psychedelic Horseshit and Puffy Aerolas (awesome when I saw them at Bourbon Street a few months ago). Advertised on the flyer is “BBQ, bonfire, sex, xxx and music all day.”

The second show is the first generator show of the year at the Punk Porch, located on the bike path just north of 5th Avenue. It’s hard to explain, but seeing bands where they’re not suppose to play makes it that much better. If anyone has bolt cutters let me know. I’m interested in setting up a generator show in the abandoned nightclub.

Defiance, Ohio @ Skylab, 5.4.2009

Posted in Columbus, DIY, punk with tags , on May 8, 2009 by blackcloudphoto

Every time I see Defiance, Ohio nowadays I get resentful of the hordes of young punks there to see them. You weren’t personally given the first demo. You didn’t see the first show in the kitchen.

Then I snap out of it. It’s too early to be a cranky old man. Besides there’s better things to get pissed off about.

It’s always great to see old friends and this show was no exception. Finally got some decent pictures of them. Before Delay and Kurt Russell this was the band I photographed the most, but for some reason I have surprisingly few good photos.

First time I’ve seen them and didn’t know some of the songs. A new album, being used as fundraiser for a worthy project, can be downloaded here.

“Incredibly inflammatory”

I normally don’t pick up the Alive these days, but I was eating lunch alone (sigh), my meal was taking forever to be served, and their paper was the only one available.

Most interesting story I read was this one about the new project from the members of Hugs & Kisses. I don’t know much about the group besides Jimi’s interview in Punk Zine with Phonzie, but their set at Comfest, pictured above, was by far the best performance I’ve ever seen at the annual event.

So the group is going in a new direction complete with a new name but the Alive won’t print it. Couldn’t you have at least give us some hints? Maybe some dashes in substitute of letters? How about something it rhymes with? It will be interesting to see if the “racial slur” is really ”incredibly inflammatory.”

Like so many times before I’ve vowed to just forget about reading the Alive, and being lonely at lunch is no longer an excuse.
