Drudge weirdness

Posted in link, newsworthy on May 20, 2009 by blackcloudphoto

So I check Drudge Report every day, not because of the obnoxious right-wing slant (how many stories need to be written about a climate change meetings being cancelled because of the weather?), but for being a one-stop site for breaking world news.

Today was a good one for news of the weird and crazy.

Birmingham police beating

Robbed at gunpoint for dentures (no, it doesn’t involve the Mango)

Green drugs

Do you like these news links? Are they annoying? Should I just focus on my photos? Let me know.

Drunk Driver, 1-4

Think one-guitar, crazy-singer, art-school rock that has more bite than most of their peers. Max described it best by saying it’s music that will get you moving sideways, not up and down.

One thing you always have to worry about with this genre is that the musicians are pretentious assholes, and maybe it was the basement setting, but these three seemed alright.

Not sure if I would give up a prime night for a set like this, but for a Monday, hot damn. Only had to walk down three flights of steps.

The Unholy Two 5-7

Thank god alcohol was only consumed on a Monday night level or my house may have been flipped upside down. After a ho-hum first half of their set, I don’t know how to explain it (writing about music is difficult when you’ve never played an instrument), the three just clicked.

Didn’t get much of a chance to enjoy things because I thought I was going to have to explain to the cops why Dreadlocked Sean was murdered in my basement.

“Well, you see, officer. He was really drunk and being annoying – like hanging on people, groping them and generally trying to piss them off … and it worked.”

He got taken out at least 10 times, including getting thrown over the drum set, tackled by the drummer, and by having drums thrown at him. Still, he kept getting back up.

That resilience sums up the set well.

Biff Boff Barf 8-9

This was a rough one, a victim to Bernies happy hour and the death of a beloved guitar, but was playing a shitty set their point? Ahh … I don’t know. Fuck these “what is a performance?” mindfucking that way too many bands are into these days. Fuck, the more I type the more they win.

To be fair, Max did shred some metal when he got a replacement guitar and the band turned things around enough at the end to receive encore requests.
