First time I’ve heard Constance play besides the Fuckup Factory practices in my basement (who have their first show amid a packed roster Valentine’s Day, 2.14, @ the Columbus Indymedia Center, 1240 Bryden Road).
This time she traded a basement for a living room, electric guitar for a banjo, and classic rock covers for slam poetry-style songs. Keeping her distinctive screams. loud enough to get everyone’s attention without amplification at Skylab, and original lyrics about everything from abusive relationships to spirit animals (I think), everyone was entertained with the largest grins I’ve seen at the venue known for noise.
After doing many of the drawings for issue two of The Black Cloud, 2009 is shaping up to be a get shit done type of year for Constance. If you had to put a label on her solo material it would be folk punk, but not the type where you roll your eyes and feel embarassed for the well-intended, yet corny, musician.
