All Columbus, all the time

Making one of the greatest catches in Super Bowl history and bringing the Pittsburgh Steelers their record sixth championship (lovingly referred to as the six pack) is not rewarding former Buckeye receiver Santonio Holmes with the fame he expected, but instead national scorn.

Are sports fans nationwide hating becuase they’re jealous of the Steelers’ unparalled success? Is it backlash from that infamous photo where  Holmes forgot his Terrible Towl and shows he deserves his porn star namesake? Or is it the fact that he created unnecessary drama by announcing less than a week before the biggest game of the season that he sold drugs as a kid?

Naw, he’s just playing the complete role of wide receiver in the NFL with quotes after the game along the lines of “winning the Super Bowl MVP feels better than when I had my kid” and “now I know I’m a superstar.” While I’m rooting for him not to run the route of Terrell Owens, Ocho Cinco and former Steeler Plaxico Burress, I can see things getting messy in Steel City.

In other Columbus news …

While the city can’t find cash to pay employees or keep rec centers open, they have decided the best course of action for the nearly vacant City Center is to demolish it.  While The Black Cloud is all for less devotion towards commerce in favor of public parks, it’s hard not to feel that the 20-year shelf life of the mall was an incredible waste of money.

In celebration of Black History Month, earlier this week The Lantern popped the question in their “Man on the Street” column who is your favorite black person? After assuming office just weeks ago, would Obama be the overwhelming choice of the mostly white students in response to the vaguely racist question?

Nope. Lil’ Wayne, Beyonce, and George Washington Carver (because he invented peanut butter) made the list.

Despite the ridiculous question, The Lantern has been kicking ass lately including this column about how Black History Month makes whites feel good. Hopefully I’m not jinxing anything, but the appearance of many self-generated, content-rich articles lately has me picking up the paper each time I see one. Still, I think it needs to make the switch to a weekly edition.

Lastly, in one of the most horrifying OSU-related stories I’ve ever heard, the family of Andrew Polakowski is sueing the university for wrongful death of their son. Not sure why they would proceed with a lawsuit as low of $25,000 especially when it seems like the incident was not within the control of the University.
